The use of tools and methods of exact sciences (such as mathematics, physics, engineering, computer sciences, etc.) in medical and physiological research is the main aim of works carried out in the Department. Currently, the works are primarily concerned with the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, phenomena that are present during dialysis, and some aspects related to metabolism. Various physiological interactions, mainly cardio-pulmonary interactions and those between the cardiovascular system and dialysis, are of particular interest for the Department.

Interactions in the living body are very sophisticated and, in consequence, their analyses in real patients are extremely difficult. Legal and ethical restrictions are additional limitations. Therefore, mathematical and computer models seem to be the best and most effective method of initial analyses of the interactions; a virtual cardiopulmonary patient, previously elaborated and still used in various applications, can be an example.

Engineering tasks (IT, mechanical, electronic, and biochemical ones) are also realized; the following works can be examples: VirRespir (a web application containing the virtual cardiopulmonary patient, accessible from  http://virrespir.ibib.waw.pl/), NetBIAL (a web database containing data from teens medical centers related to patients suffering from lymphocytic leukaemia), an artificial cardiopulmonary patient (for tests of new medical equipments) or a manometer for pleural pressure measurement.
