Hemodialysis (HD) therapy holds a critical role for the management of excess fluid in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), who can’t maintain homeostasis without external intervention. Prolonged fluid imbalance leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and increased mortality, thus the need of effective, tailored HD treatments. Homeostasis between body compartments is influenced by many factors – hydraulic pressures, vessel/tissue water permeability, ion and protein transport. There is often no non-invasive way to measure the effect of many of the processes involved in homeostasis preservation. Mathematical modelling offers a way to estimate quantities we cannot access directly without inconvenience for the patient. Our objective is the creation of a mathematical model to describe the osmotic fluid shifts and the refilling of water to the vascular space during water removal, with assumptions physiologically sound as possible while trying to keep the overall complexity of the model low.
